Cognitive biases are systematic errors in thinking that affect our judgements and decisions. One of the most pervasive is confirmation bias — the tendency to search for, interpret, and recall information in a way that confirms our pre-existing beliefs. This is compounded by the availability heuristic, whereby we overestimate the likelihood of events that come easily to mind. What makes these biases particularly insidious is that they operate largely below the level of conscious awareness. Simply knowing about a bias does not make us immune to it.
